Weekly Challenge #5: UNCRACKED Case Study _ Dylan Chen

Introducing HydraWave, the ocean-powered hydration gel redefining sports nutrition. Made from sustainable seaweed, HydraWave replaces synthetic stabilizers with natural electrolytes, giving you clean hydration and mineral-rich energy—straight from the sea.

The most persuasive pitches had three key elements: a specific, relatable problem that resonates with consumers; clear innovation explaining why the product is better than existing solutions; and a dual go-to-market strategy (B2C + B2B) showing scalability. Tangible storytelling with concrete examples like “This batch rescued 2 lbs of vegetables from Berkeley Bowl” also stood out by painting vivid, memorable pictures.

Pitching HydraWave was challenging and eye-opening. I had to fully internalize their problem-solution fit and get genuinely excited about seaweed-based hydration, which wasn’t my original concept. The hardest part was delivering it with authentic passion when it wasn’t mine, but this taught me that successful founders constantly need to sell their team’s contributions, partners’ value propositions, and investors’ thesis. Belief in the mission matters more than ownership of the idea.

Strengths: My technical background in data science and mobile development makes me strong at building product prototypes quickly, from concept to MVP. I also have solid systems thinking—I naturally see how different business components connect, from supply chains to revenue models to customer flows.

Weaknesses: I tend to focus on technical features rather than emotional storytelling, and I sometimes build first without deeply validating market demand. I also thrive in structured environments and need to get more comfortable making decisions with incomplete information, which is critical for entrepreneurship.
