Weekly Challenge #2: Pay it Forward _ Belfu Berkol

This week, I organized a small “study care package” drop for international students in my dorm who were feeling homesick before midterms. I prepared bags with tea, snacks, and handwritten notes with encouragement in different languages. I wanted them to feel seen and supported during a stressful time.
As someone who moved from Turkey to Berkeley, I know how hard it can be to be far from family while balancing academics. Acts of empathy create belonging—and I want to be the kind of innovator who builds communities where everyone feels valued.
This experience reminded me that kindness doesn’t have to be large-scale to be powerful. A few thoughtful gestures can change someone’s emotional state and foster connection. I noticed how people opened up and started studying together afterward, forming small support circles.
Kindness, in this sense, is a leadership practice: it creates trust, collaboration, and emotional safety—the same qualities I hope to embody as a future leader in science and entrepreneurship.
