1) Relationship building beats networking. It’s about genuinely staying in touch with people, understanding what they care about, and actually helping them. The speaker’s story showed how one reconnection led to a whole chain of introductions because he stayed authentic and kept people updated on his progress.
2) The interactive polling and real stories. Hearing Gorick actually bomb interviews at McKinsey and still figure it out was way more useful than generic advice. And the audience participation with the red/blue cards made it feel like we were solving problems together instead of just listening. That made it stick.
3) I was hoping to understand how to actually start networking when you don’t have connections or when you’re not naturally good at it. The talk helped because it showed the formula: reconnect with people you already know , ask for specific introductions, be genuine about wanting to learn, and follow up. That’s actionable instead of just “network better.”
