The Unspoken Rules of Recruiting Season _ Ethan Dunn

1. Most important insight
The biggest thing I took away was that recruiters are basically asking three questions: can you do the job, do you really want this job, and will people want to work with you. I’ve been putting almost all my effort into the first one, proving I’m qualified, and not nearly enough into showing why I want a specific role or how I’d fit on a team. That changes how I’m going to approach cover letters and interviews going forward.

2. Most valuable part to keep
The part on the unwritten rules of recruiting was the most useful. A lot of it is stuff that seems obvious to people who grew up around these industries but nobody actually explains. Hearing it laid out directly, with real examples, was more helpful than generic resume and networking advice. I’d definitely keep that.

3. Recruiting challenge and whether it helped
I’m recruiting for roles in the intelligence community, where the process is slow and opaque and there isn’t much insider advice out there compared to consulting or finance. I was hoping to figure out how to stand out when the usual networking playbook doesn’t really apply. It helped partly.
