Life of a Bottle: Exploring Sustainability as an Entrepreneur _ Arnav Jamwal

Slide 1 – The Life of Our Bottle (Today)
This slide introduces a 20 oz Pepsi PET bottle and briefly describes how it is made from mostly virgin plastic with some recycled content. It explains that the bottle is produced, filled, and packaged using significant water and energy, then shipped to retailers and consumed in a very short single-use window. It then states that after use, some bottles are recycled but many end up in landfills or as litter, and identifies low collection rates and contamination as key breakdowns in circularity.

Slide 2 – Our Circular Innovation: “City Loop Bottle System”
This slide explains that the City Loop Bottle System treats each bottle as a reusable asset in a local closed-loop system. It describes redesigned bottles using high recycled content and standardized shapes with simple labels and QR codes to make sorting, refilling, and consumer engagement easier. It then states that returned bottles are either washed and refilled multiple times or turned into high-quality rPET for new bottles, while bottling and cleaning operations are upgraded to use water and energy more efficiently.

Slide 3 – Scaling the Circular System
This slide states that PepsiCo would pilot the system in one city with one flagship product and then expand to other brands like Gatorade and Bubly after proving the model. It explains that success depends on partnerships with municipalities and recyclers for collection, with retailers and campuses for return points, and with community groups for education. It concludes by noting that the system would be tracked with metrics such as return rates, recycled content, water use per liter of beverage, virgin plastic reduction, and emissions avoided.
