The Life of a Pepsi Bottle: From Linear Waste to Circular, Water-Smart Loop
For this challenge, I focused on a standard 20 oz PET bottle of Pepsi in the U.S. and used
it as a lens to connect the “life of a bottle” with PepsiCo’s broader sustainability strategy
under pep+ (PepsiCo Positive).
1. The Current Journey of the Bottle
Today, the life of a typical PET bottle is still mostly linear. It starts with virgin PET resin,
produced from fossil fuels, which is shipped to bottling partners and molded into
preforms and then bottles. This process consumes energy and water even before any
beverage is filled.
In the bottling plant, the bottle is blown, filled, capped, labeled, and packaged. Water is
used for cleaning, rinsing, and running production lines; energy is required for refrigeration
and transport. Once the bottle leaves the plant, it is distributed to retailers and eventually
bought by a consumer. The actual “use phase” of the bottle is extremely short—often just
a few minutes.
At end of life, the system breaks down. In practice, only a fraction of PET bottles are
collected and recycled in a way that allows them to become new beverage bottles. Many
are landfilled, incinerated, or leak into the environment. Even when they are collected,
they are frequently downcycled into textiles or other materials rather than going back into
food-grade bottles, which means new virgin plastic still has to be produced.
So, despite the existence of recycling systems in many markets, the current journey is
best described as “mostly linear with small circular loops.” The main pain points are:
• Heavy dependence on virgin plastic
• Insufficient collection and sorting
• Limited closed-loop (bottle-to-bottle) recycling
• Water and energy use that is not always optimized for local water stress
2. PepsiCo’s pep+ Sustainability Framework
PepsiCo’s sustainability efforts are now organized under pep+ (PepsiCo Positive), which
is described as an end-to-end transformation of how the company grows
