I chose GOAT, a Berkeley-founded consumer marketplace for sneakers and streetwear. Its main competitor is StockX. GOAT stands out because it built its marketplace around the problem of trust in sneaker resale, making authentication part of the buying experience. Its target audience is young consumers who actively participate in sneaker culture and use digital marketplaces to find products that are difficult to purchase through traditional retail. I chose GOAT because I am interested in consumer products and consumer institutions, especially the way products influence consumer behavior and become part of everyday purchasing decisions.
GOAT’s journey changed how I think about consumer product management. The company found an opportunity within an existing market by focusing on a problem consumers already experienced. This showed me that product development starts with observing consumer behavior rather than simply generating new features. I also learned that competition can push a company to understand its users more precisely. For my own career, I want to develop the ability to identify why consumers behave a certain way and use that understanding to shape products. GOAT showed me that studying the institution around a product can reveal opportunities that are easy to miss when focusing only on the product itself.
