Framework #1: Explore Berkeley I&E Founding Stories _ Santhusha Mudannayaka

1) Databricks, founded by researchers from UC Berkeley’s AMPLab

2. Competitors: Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and Amazon Redshift

Uniqueness: It grew directly out of the open-source Apache Spark/AMPLab research and popularized the “data lakehouse” idea (blending data-lake scale for unstructured data with data-warehouse reliability), plus deep integrations and tooling for AI/ML workflows

Current target audience: Large enterprises and data teams (data engineers, data scientists, ML engineers, and platform teams) that need to prepare, analyze, and deploy data and AI at scale.

3. Working through Databricks’ story reminds me that deep technical expertise (building something useful from research) plus strong ties to open-source can create enormous leverage; technical credibility became a market advantage for them. Their journey also shows the value of focusing on a clear customer pain (making large-scale data + AI practical), iterating the product (lakehouse to AI tooling), and forming strategic partnerships/acquisitions to stay competitive. For my own career, that suggests prioritizing domain expertise, contributing to shared technical communities, and being product-obsessed about solving a real, measurable customer problem, while staying ready to pivot or partner as the market (and competitors) evolves.
