I looked at Perfect Day, a food technology company founded in Berkeley in 2014.
Some Competitors include:
The Traditional Dairy Industry: This includes massive agricultural cooperatives and corporations like Dairy Farmers of America or Land O’Lakes. They are the incumbents, competing on immense scale, established supply chains, and low costs.
Plant-Based Alternatives: Companies like Oatly (oat milk). They compete for the same environmentally-conscious and health-conscious consumers, but with fundamentally different products derived from plants.
Perfect day is unique not only because they are primarily B2B but also in that their products are exactly the same as the dairy but eco-conscious.
My reflection is that Perfect Day’s strategy shows that you don’t always have to compete head-on. Instead of trying to make a better oat milk than Oatly or produce milk cheaper than a dairy farm, they created a new, high-value product for a certain underserved audience where they were the first and best. They chose to compete on technology and functionality, not just price.
