Framework #1: Explore Berkeley I&E Founding Stories _ Blaire Shin

1) Coursera – It is founded by Andrew Ng who is an alumnus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2002.

2) edX: Founded by MIT and Harvard, focuses on MOOCs, MicroMasters, and Professional Certificates. Known for high academic credibility and university partnerships. Udacity: Specializes in Nanodegrees, industry-driven and skill-based learning (AI, data, cloud, programming). Strong ties with tech companies for career readiness. Udemy: A marketplace for thousands of instructors; offers affordable, wide-ranging courses (from coding to hobbies). Less academic credibility, but highly accessible.

Coursera is unique in many ways. It partners with hundreds of world-class universities and organizations, making its credentials highly reputable. Many courses are free to audit, with affordable upgrade paths. Global learner base supported by multilingual content and flexible pacing. Focus on democratizing access to world-class education, especially in emerging markets, while also generating sustainable business models.

3) Coursera started with a bold mission of democratizing education. But it succeeded by aligning that mission with sustainable business models. For my own career, I need to hold on to a mission but also translate it into practical, scalable strategies. The company gained legitimacy by partnering with top universities early on. For me, this underscores the value of alliances and networks and that credibility and trust often come faster through strategic collaborations than through solo efforts. With edX, Udemy, and Udacity as strong rivals, Coursera differentiated by offering the “best of both worlds” through academic credibility + career-relevant skills. This teaches me to identify what only I (or my team) can uniquely offer, and double down on that value proposition when facing competition.
