1. What’s one new insight you walked away with?
My biggest takeaway was that startup recruiting rewards proof of work. A small, relevant project can give a company a concrete reason to consider you beyond your résumé. It also gives you something specific to discuss in an interview and shows that you understand the problems they’re trying to solve.
2. How could you apply something you learned?
As a Statistics major, I could analyze a public dataset related to a startup’s industry and turn it into a short report or dashboard. I could then reference that project in a personalized outreach email, explaining what I found and asking a thoughtful question. This would help me practice applying statistics while making my outreach more meaningful.
3. What would you like covered in a future episode?
I’d love an episode featuring a startup’s first data scientist or analyst. I’m curious about how they landed the role, what projects helped them stand out, and how they make useful decisions when the company has limited or messy data.
