I major in International Business at National Taiwan University and am currently on exchange at UC Berkeley. I attended “Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society (STS) ” because I wanted to explore how scientific knowledge and technology shape society, and how society shapes them in return. With my interest in entrepreneurship, I often think about technology in terms of business opportunities and practical applications. STS offered a different perspective by encouraging me to question how we define progress, whose interests innovation serves, and how we decide which evidence to trust.

One takeaway was that more evidence does not necessarily lead to agreement. In examining scientific controversies, I learned that people can interpret the same findings differently because they bring different assumptions, methods, and priorities. This made me reflect on how I approach market research and startup decisions.

I also learned to look beyond a product’s intended benefits. A technology can create value while producing consequences its creators did not anticipate. As someone interested in building startups, I want to apply this perspective by listening to a wider range of stakeholders and considering social impacts alongside growth and profitability.
