I am an Environmental Economics & Policy major and I attended the class COGSCI175 “Mind, Machine, and Meaning: Living Intentionally in the Digital Age!” on Wednesday, September 23rd. I choose this class because it is completely different from what I am studying but I am genuinely curious about how our minds work. We live in an mental health epidemic with so many, especially young, people being medicated for anxiety and depression and constantly glued to their phones instead of being present and having social interactions. While the content discussion in the class is not exactly applicable to my major, I learned a lot for myself. For example we talked about the 3 defusion techniques to brake the shame cycle. For example, when I procrastinate an assignment because I feel overwhelmed and instead scroll on social media for an hour, which makes me feel worse about myself and shame myself for it. One technique is to giving the story in my head a name such as “I’m lazy” story, which allows to distance myself from that emotion and build self-awareness. Instead if saying “Oh I’m so lazy” I can say “Oh this is the I’m lazy story and I exactly know how that goes”. I really loved this class and could have sat there for hours. I might actually try to take it next semester.
