1) What class did you attend?
Deep Tech Commercialization Strategies (Fall 2025)
2) Why did you choose that class?
I chose this class because I wanted to build a structured framework for understanding how breakthrough scientific discoveries can be translated into commercially viable ventures. As a venture capital professional with a legal background, I often evaluate deep-tech startups, but I felt the need to deepen my knowledge of the commercialization process—bridging lab-based research, IP strategy, regulatory pathways, and market entry.
3) What did you discover?
I discovered that deep-tech commercialization requires a very different mindset from software or consumer ventures. It requires a deep understanding of the underlying technology and its potential applications. In particular, building and protecting a strong IP portfolio is critical, and I came to appreciate how the role of a product counsel becomes important in aligning intellectual property strategy with product development. I also realized that commercialization due diligence goes beyond financial analysis. It demands sector-specific industry insight to evaluate scalability, regulatory compliance, and market adoption pathways.
